How it works

Has two main uses: (1) directing an action or attitude toward a target — 'toward / to / against' (e.g. being polite toward someone); and (2) contrast — 'whereas / in contrast to', comparing two things. The noun-modifying form is ~に対する.

主に二つの用法がある。(1)動作・態度が向けられる対象「~に向かって/~に」。(2)対比「~のに対して」で二つの物事を比べる。名詞を修飾するときは「~に対する」。

Formation

Noun + に対して(名詞を修飾するときは Noun + に対する + 名詞);対比のときは 普通形 + のに対して

Examples

  • がくせいはせんせいにたいして、ていねいなことばをつかうべきだ。

Students should use polite language toward their teachers.

  • あにはかっぱつなのにたいして、おとうとはおとなしい。

Whereas the older brother is lively, the younger one is quiet.

  • かれのしつれいなたいどにたいして、みんながおこった。

Everyone got angry at his rude attitude.

Notes

  • Use the target/attitude sense for verbs of attitude or action directed at someone (失礼だ, 反対する, 質問する).対象・態度の用法は「失礼だ・反対する・質問する」など向ける動作と使う。
  • For contrast, use the clause form ~のに対して (彼は静かなのに対して...).対比のときは「~のに対して」の形を使う。
  • Don't confuse with ~について (topic of thought/speech); ~に対して targets or contrasts.「~について(話題)」と混同しない。「~に対して」は対象・対比を表す。
