How it works

Means that unless the first action is completed first, the second thing cannot/will not happen. The first action is a necessary prerequisite. The main clause is typically negative or expresses impossibility/difficulty. 〜てからでなければ is a more formal variant.

Formation

Examples

You can't get into that restaurant unless you make a reservation first.

I can't give an answer until after I consult with the manager.

I can't decide until I've looked into it carefully.

Notes

  • The main clause is normally negative / expresses inability (〜
  • Emphasizes a required first step more strongly than plain 〜
  • 〜てからでなければ is the more formal equivalent.
