きれない

How it works

The negative potential of ~きる ('do completely / to the end'). Attached to the verb stem, it means one cannot finish or fully do something, usually because the amount or degree is too large to handle entirely.

「~きる(最後まで・完全に~する)」の可能否定形です。動詞のます形語幹に付き、量や程度が大きすぎて「全部~しきれない・最後までできない」ことを表します。

Formation

Verb ます-stem + きれない (e.g. 食べきれない, 数えきれない, 待ちきれない)

Examples

  • りょうりがおおすぎて、ぜんぶはたべきれない。

There's too much food, so I can't finish it all.

  • そらにはかぞえきれないほどのほしがでていた。

There were countless stars out in the sky.

  • しゅくだいがおおくて、きょうじゅうにはやりきれない。

There's so much homework that I can't get it all done today.

Notes

  • Attaches to the ます-stem (食べる→食べきれない).ます形語幹に付きます(食べる→食べきれない)。
  • The affirmative 〜きる means 'finish/do completely'; 〜きれない is its potential negative.肯定の「~きる(完全にやり終える)」の可能否定が「~きれない」です。
  • 数えきれない(countless)is a fixed, very common expression.「数えきれない(数えられないほど多い)」は定番表現です。
