How it works

The plain imperative conjugation expresses a strong, blunt command. It sounds rough and is mostly used by men, in anger, in emergencies, by drill instructors/coaches, in sports cheers (がんばれ!), in quoted instructions, and on signs. It is too strong for ordinary polite conversation.

Formation

Godan: change final -u to -e

Examples

    Hurry up! There's no time.

Hang in there! Just a little more!

The teacher said to write your name here.

Notes

  • Very strong and rough; rarely used by women in this bare form and inappropriate toward superiors.
  • Common in fixed encouragements (がんばれ!, 負けるな!), quoted commands, and written signs/instructions.
