Don't ~ (strong negative command / prohibition)

How it works

The prohibitive な attaches to the dictionary form of a verb to forbid an action strongly and bluntly. Like the imperative, it sounds rough and is used in anger, emergencies, warnings, signs, and sports. Note: this 禁止 な (after dictionary form) is different from the soft-command ~な (shortened なさい, after ます-stem).

Formation

V dictionary form +

Examples

It's dangerous, so don't go in there!

    Don't be late ever again.

It says 'Keep off the grass.'

Notes

  • Attaches to the dictionary form (行くな), unlike soft-command ~な which attaches to the ます-stem (行きな).
  • Strong and rough; for polite prohibition use ~
  • Common on warning signs and in quoted commands.
