How it works

Attached to the dictionary form (or ない form) of a verb to express that something occasionally happens or that one sometimes does an action. Unlike the past-tense ~たことがある (experience), this present form describes occasional, recurring occurrences.

動詞の辞書形(やない形)に付いて、「時々~することがある」という、たまに起こる・する出来事を表す。過去形「~たことがある(経験)」とは異なり、現在形は『時々起こる』ことを表す。

Formation

Verb (dictionary/ない plain form) + ことがある

Examples

  • しゅうまつはおそくまでねることがあります。

On weekends, there are times when I sleep in late.

  • かれはときどき、やくそくをわすれることがある。

    Sometimes he forgets his promises.

  • いそがしいときは、ひるごはんをたべないことがある。

When I'm busy, there are times when I don't eat lunch.

Notes

  • Dictionary form + ことがある = occasional present; past form ~たことがある = past experience.辞書形+ことがある=時々(現在)。過去形「~たことがある」は経験。
  • Often used with 時々, たまに, ときどき to stress frequency.「時々」「たまに」などと一緒に使うことが多い。
  • Do not confuse with ~ことはない (no need to).「必要がない」の「~ことはない」と混同しないこと。
