How it works

Indicates that a state remains unchanged while another action occurs or is left unattended. It expresses 'doing B while still in state A' or 'leaving A as it is.' Commonly attaches to past-tense verbs (た-form), nouns + の, and demonstratives like その.

ある状態が変わらないまま、別の動作が行われる、または放置されることを表す。「Aの状態のままBする/Aをそのままにしておく」という意味。動詞のた形、名詞+の、「その」などに付く。

Formation

Verb た-form / Verb ない-form / Noun + の / この・その・あの + まま

Examples

  • つかれていたので、でんきをつけたままねてしまった。

I was tired, so I fell asleep with the lights still on.

  • くつをはいたままへやにはいらないでください。

Please don't enter the room with your shoes still on.

  • むかしのまま、なにもかわっていないまちだ。

It's a town that is just as it was long ago, with nothing changed.

Notes

  • With verbs it usually attaches to the た-form to show a maintained state.動詞では基本的にた形に付いて、続いている状態を表す。
  • Noun connects with の (元のまま); demonstratives connect directly (そのまま).名詞は「の」で接続(元のまま)、指示詞は直接(そのまま)。
  • ない-form + まま means 'without doing' (食べないまま = without eating).ない形+ままは「~しないで」の意味(食べないまま)。
