How it works

For godan verbs, the causative is formed by changing the final ~u to ~a and adding せる (行く→行かせる, 読む→読ませる). It means to make someone do something or to let them do it. The doer is marked with を (intransitive) or に (transitive).

五段動詞の使役は、語尾の「u」段を「a」段に変えて「せる」を付ける(行く→行かせる、読む→読ませる)。「無理に~させる」または「~させてあげる」を表す。行為者は自動詞で「を」、他動詞で「に」を取る。

Formation

Godan: 〜u段 → 〜a段 + せる (行く→行かせる、書く→書かせる、待つ→待たせる); ※「う」→「わ」(買う→買わせる)

Examples

  • ぶちょうはしんじんをしゅっちょうにいかせました。

The manager sent (made go) the new employee on a business trip.

  • おまたせして、もうしわけありません。

I'm sorry to have kept you waiting.

  • こどもにすきなほんをよませています。

I let my child read the books they like.

Notes

  • Verbs ending in 〜う take 〜わ before せる (買う→買わせる, not ×買あせる).「う」で終わる動詞は「わ」になる(買う→買わせる)。
  • お待たせしました is a fixed polite phrase built on the causative of 待つ.「お待たせしました」は待つの使役を使った定型表現。
  • Person doing the action: を for intransitive verbs, に for transitive verbs.行為者は自動詞で「を」、他動詞で「に」を取る。
