How it works

The causative for ichidan verbs (and する→させる, くる→こさせる) is ~させる. It expresses making someone do something (coercion) or letting someone do something (permission). With intransitive verbs the person made/let to act takes を; with transitive verbs the person takes に (so the object can keep を).

一段動詞(および する→させる、来る→来させる)の使役形は「~させる」。「無理に~させる(強制)」または「~させてあげる(許可)」を表す。自動詞では行為者に「を」、他動詞では行為者に「に」を付ける(目的語が「を」を取れるように)。

Formation

Ichidan: 〜る → 〜させる (食べる→食べさせる、起きる→起きさせる); する → させる; くる → こさせる; 自動詞:人を/他動詞:人に

Examples

  • ははははおとうとにやさいをたべさせました。

Mother made/had my younger brother eat vegetables.

  • こどもをこうえんであそばせました。

I let the children play in the park.

  • すみません、すこしかんがえさせてください。

Excuse me, please let me think a little.

Notes

  • Coercion vs. permission depends on context; ~させてあげる/~させてください clearly mean 'let.'強制か許可かは文脈で決まる。「~させてあげる/ください」は明確に許可。
  • Intransitive verb → person marked with を (子供を遊ばせる); transitive verb → person marked with に (弟に食べさせる).自動詞は行為者に「を」、他動詞は「に」を使う。
  • ははは is the natural reading of 母は (haha + wa).丁寧に許可を求めるときは「~させていただけませんか」も使える。
