How it works

For godan verbs, the passive is formed by changing the final ~u sound to ~a and adding It marks the subject as the receiver of an action, with the agent usually marked by に. The adversative ('suffering') passive is also common with godan verbs, e.g.

Formation

Examples

I was laughed at by everyone.

I got rained on (to my misfortune) on the way home.

This novel is read all over the world.

Notes

  • Used with intransitive verbs, it forms the 'suffering passive' (雨に降られる = be inconvenienced by rain).
  • The agent is marked with に; in formal/written contexts によって can appear.
