とかとか

How it works

Used to list a couple of representative examples out of many possibilities, similar to 'like X and Y, etc.' It is more casual than ~や~など and implies the list is not exhaustive. It can attach to nouns, verbs, and adjectives, and is common in spoken Japanese.

たくさんある中から代表的な例をいくつか挙げるときに使う表現で、「~や~など」よりくだけた言い方。挙げたもの以外にもあることを暗に示す。名詞だけでなく動詞や形容詞にも付き、会話でよく使われる。

Formation

Noun + とか + Noun + とか / Plain form + とか + Plain form + とか

Examples

  • しゅうまつはかいものとかえいがとかをしてすごします。

On weekends I spend my time doing things like shopping and watching movies.

  • りんごとかみかんとか、くだものがすきです。

I like fruit, such as apples and oranges.

  • やすみのひはねるとかほんをよむとかしています。

On my days off I do things like sleeping and reading books.

Notes

  • The list is not complete; it suggests other similar things exist.挙げた例がすべてではなく、ほかにも同類のものがあることを示す。
  • More casual than ~や~など; common in conversation.「~や~など」より口語的で会話向き。
  • The final とか can sometimes be dropped, leaving a trailing nuance (例: りんごとかみかんとか好き).最後の「とか」は省略されることもある。
