しし

How it works

~し is used to list multiple reasons or facts that support a conclusion, with the nuance of 'and what's more.' Even a single ~し can imply there are other unstated reasons. It connects plain-form clauses.

~しは、ある結論を支える複数の理由や事柄を「それに~だし」という含みで列挙するのに使います。一つだけ使っても「他にも理由がある」という含みが出ます。普通形の文をつなぎます。

Formation

Plain form + し(名詞・な形容詞は だ+し:例 静かだし、学生だし。動詞・い形容詞はそのまま+し:例 安いし、行くし)

Examples

  • このみせはやすいし、おいしいし、よくきます。

This place is cheap, and tasty too, so I come here often.

  • きょうはてんきもいいし、さんぽにでもいきませんか。

The weather's nice (among other things), so shall we go for a walk or something?

  • かれはしんせつだし、あたまもいいし、みんなにすかれている。

He's kind, and smart too, so everyone likes him.

Notes

  • Use the plain form before し; for nouns and な-adjectives add だ (学生だし, 元気だし).しの前は普通形。名詞・な形容詞は「だ」を付けます(学生だし、元気だし)。
  • も often appears in the listed items (天気もいいし) to reinforce the 'and also' nuance; a single し can hint at further reasons.列挙する項目に「も」を添えると「~も~も」の含みが強まります。一つだけのしでも「他にも理由がある」と暗示できます。
