~ために
in order to / for the sake of (purpose)
〜ために(目的)
- JLPT
- N5
- Register
- neutral
How it works
Expresses purpose: the action in the main clause is done in order to achieve the goal stated before ために. Use a volitional/controllable dictionary-form verb or a noun + の. Both clauses generally share the same subject. (Note: ために can also mean 'because of', but the N5 purpose use is the focus here.)
目的を表します。「ために」の前に述べた目標を達成するために、主節の動作を行うという意味です。意志的な動詞の辞書形、または「名詞+の」を使います。前後の主語は基本的に同じです。(「原因」の意味もありますが、ここではN5の「目的」用法を扱います。)
Formation
V辞書形 + ために / Nの + ために(例:合格するために、健康のために)

Notes
- Use ために with controllable, volitional verbs; for non-volitional results (e.g. 'so that I can hear'), use ように instead.意志的な動詞には「ために」、無意志(〜できるように等)には「ように」を使います。
- Noun purpose takes の (健康のために), not な.名詞の目的は「の」で接続します(健康のために)。
- ために can also express cause ('because of'), but that meaning usually uses past/state forms and context distinguishes it.「ために」は原因の意味にもなりますが、文脈と時制で目的か原因かが分かります。
