How it works

The suffix さ turns an i-adjective or na-adjective into a noun expressing the degree, quality, or measurable extent of that adjective (高い→高さ 'height', 大切→大切さ 'importance'). It objectively names the property/amount, in contrast with み, which expresses a more subjective or felt quality.

接尾語「さ」はイ形容詞・ナ形容詞を名詞にし、その程度・性質・測れる度合いを表します(高い→高さ、大切→大切さ)。性質や量を客観的に名づける点で、より主観的・感覚的な「み」と対照されます。

Formation

i-adj (drop い) + さ(高い→高さ)/na-adj + さ(便利→便利さ)

Examples

  • このやまのたかさはさんぜんメートルです。

This mountain's height is 3,000 meters.

  • かのじょのやさしさにかんどうした。

I was moved by her kindness.

  • このしごとのたいへんさがわかった。

I understood how tough this job is.

Notes

  • For i-adjectives, drop the final い then add さ (寒い→寒さ); いい/よい becomes よさ.イ形容詞は「い」を取って「さ」を付けます(寒い→寒さ)。「いい/よい」は「よさ」になります。
  • さ names an objective degree/amount; み (e.g. 温かみ, 重み) feels more subjective/sensory and attaches to fewer adjectives.「さ」は客観的な程度・量を名づけ、「み」(温かみ・重みなど)はより主観的・感覚的で、付く形容詞も限られます。
  • Attaches to adjectives, not directly to plain verbs.形容詞に付き、動詞の辞書形には直接付きません。
