How it works

Means 'only / nothing but,' often with a negative or critical nuance that the speaker thinks there is too much of one thing. ~てばかりいる means 'do nothing but (verb)'. Different from the time-based ~たばかり ('just did') and the degree ~ばかり ('about').

「~だけ・~ばかり」の限定を表し、「そればかりで多すぎる」という否定的・批判的なニュアンスを伴うことが多い。「~てばかりいる」で「~してばかりいる(~ばかりしている)」の意味。時間の「~たばかり(~したところ)」や概数の「~ばかり(およそ)」とは別。

Formation

Noun + ばかり;Verb て-form + ばかりいる

Examples

  • おとうとはゲームばかりしている。

My little brother does nothing but play games.

  • かれはもんくばかりいっていて、なにもしない。

He does nothing but complain and never does anything.

  • ないてばかりいないで、げんきをだして。

Don't just keep crying — cheer up.

Notes

  • Often critical: implies the speaker thinks there's 'too much of only that.'「そればかりで多すぎる」という批判的なニュアンスを持つことが多い。
  • Use ~てばかりいる for 'keep doing nothing but ~' (遊んでばかりいる).「~てばかりいる」で「~してばかりいる」を表す(遊んでばかりいる)。
  • Don't confuse with ~たばかり ('just did') or numerical ~ばかり ('about, approximately').「~たばかり(~したところ)」や数の「~ばかり(およそ)」と混同しないこと。
