How it works

~たばかり means an action was done only recently. Unlike ~たところだ, which marks the exact moment of completion, ~ばかり expresses the speaker's subjective feeling that little time has passed, so it can be used even when some real time has elapsed.

~たばかりは「~したばかり」、つまり最近したばかりだという意味です。完了の瞬間を表す~たところだと違い、~ばかりは「まだ間もない」という話し手の主観的な感覚を表すので、実際には多少時間が経っていても使えます。

Formation

Verb た-form + ばかり(だ)(例:始める→始めたばかり、買う→買ったばかり)

Examples

  • にほんにきたばかりで、まだかんじがよめません。

I've only just come to Japan, so I still can't read kanji.

  • このとけいはせんげつかったばかりなのに、もうこわれた。

I only just bought this watch last month, yet it's already broken.

  • たべたばかりだから、おなかがすいていません。

I just ate, so I'm not hungry.

Notes

  • ~ばかり is subjective (feels recent) and can describe things from days/weeks ago; ~たところだ is objective and means literally just now.~ばかりは主観的で、数日・数週間前のことにも使えます。~たところだは客観的で、本当にたった今だけです。
  • Do not confuse with ~ばかり meaning 'only/nothing but' (e.g., 遊んでばかりいる).「~てばかりいる(~してばかり)=そればかりする」とは意味が異なるので注意しましょう。
