How it works

Means 'there is no way / no means to do something,' expressing that an action is impossible because no method exists. It attaches to the verb ます-stem + ようがない (also ようもない). Often used when you'd help/act but simply cannot.

「~する方法・手段がない」「~しようにもできない」という意味で、方法がないために動作が不可能であることを表す。動詞のますstem+「ようがない(ようもない)」につく。「したくてもできない」場面でよく使う。

Formation

Verb ます-stem + ようがない(/ようもない);e.g. 連絡する→連絡しようがない

Examples

  • でんわばんごうがわからないので、れんらくしようがない。

I don't know the phone number, so there's no way to contact them.

  • もうこわれてしまって、なおしようがない。

It's already broken, so there's no way to fix it.

  • ほんとうのことをしらないのだから、こたえようがない。

Since I don't know the truth, there's no way I can answer.

Notes

  • Attaches to the ます-stem: する→しようがない, 直す→直しようがない.動詞のますstemにつく(する→しようがない、直す→直しようがない)。
  • ようもない is a slightly stronger/written variant with the same meaning.「ようもない」はやや強め・書き言葉的な同義の形。
  • Implies impossibility due to lack of means, not mere unwillingness.意志ではなく、手段がないための不可能さを表す。
