～ことはできない

How it works

The negative of ～ことができる. Attaches to the dictionary form of a verb to state that one is unable to do something or that it is not possible. With は (rather than が) it adds a slight emphasis/contrast, often implying 'this particular thing cannot be done.'

～ことができるの否定形です。動詞の辞書形に付いて、「～できない」「～は不可能だ」と述べます。が ではなく は を使うと、軽い強調・対比のニュアンスが加わり、「これに限ってはできない」という含みを持つことがあります。

Formation

V-dictionary form + ことはできない (e.g. 泳ぐ + ことはできない → 泳ぐことはできない)

Examples

• ここでは写真をとることはできません。

  ここではしゃしんをとることはできません。

  You cannot take photographs here.

• 過去にもどることはできない。

  かこにもどることはできない。

  We cannot go back to the past.

• 規則なので、例外を認めることはできません。

  きそくなので、れいがいをみとめることはできません。

  Since it is a rule, we cannot allow exceptions.

Notes

• Use the dictionary form before ことは: 泳ぐことはできない (correct), not 泳げることはできない.ことはの前は辞書形を使います。泳ぐことはできない（○）／泳げることはできない（×）。
• It is more formal/written than the plain potential (泳げない); both are correct, but ～ことはできない sounds more declarative.可能形の否定（泳げない）より改まった・書き言葉的な響きで、より断定的に聞こえます。
• Using は instead of が adds contrast/emphasis ('this can't be done'); ～ことができない with が is more neutral.がではなくはを使うと対比・強調のニュアンスが出ます（これはできない）。
