How it works

Formed from the volitional + とする ('try to do') turned negative. It describes a subject who shows no intention or willingness to perform an action—they 'won't even try.' It is the negative counterpart of ~ようとする.

Formation

Examples

The child won't (even try to) eat his vegetables.

No matter how much I called, he wouldn't even look this way.

She refuses to admit her own mistake.

Notes

  • Use the volitional form before
  • It expresses a deliberate lack of will, so it is typically used about people (and sometimes stubborn animals), not natural phenomena.
  • Don't confuse with ~ないようにする ('make an effort not to do'), which is the opposite—an intentional avoidance.~ないようにする(しないように努める)とは反対の意味なので混同しないこと。
