How it works

~ことができる expresses ability or possibility ('can do'). It attaches to the dictionary form of a verb. It is somewhat more formal and explicit than the verb's potential form (e.g., 話せる) and is common in writing and polite speech. A noun can also be used directly with ができる (e.g., 日本語ができる).

「~ことができる」は能力や可能性(~できる)を表します。動詞の辞書形に付きます。動詞の可能形(例:話せる)よりやや改まった、はっきりした言い方で、文章や丁寧な会話でよく使われます。名詞に直接「ができる」を付けることもできます(例:日本語ができる)。

Formation

V辞書形 + ことができる / Noun + ができる(例:泳ぐことができる/運転ができる)

Examples

  • かれはぴあのをひくことができます。

    He can play the piano.

  • ここでしゃしんをとることができますか。

    Can I take photos here?

  • わたしはかんじをよむことができません。

    I can't read kanji.

Notes

  • Attach to the dictionary form (読む + ことができる), never the past form.動詞の辞書形に付く(読む+ことができる)。過去形には付けない。
  • It is roughly equal to the potential form: 読むことができる ≈ 読める, but slightly more formal.可能形とほぼ同じ意味:読むことができる≒読める。ただしやや改まった言い方。
  • With a noun, drop こと and use directly: 日本語ができる ('can do/speak Japanese').名詞の場合は「こと」を取って直接付ける:日本語ができる。
