お～ください

How it works

A polite, honorific way to ask or invite someone to do something, more respectful than the plain ～てください. It is the imperative of the honorific verb くださる, so it raises the listener and is typical of customer service, announcements, and signs.

相手に何かをするようていねいに依頼・案内する尊敬表現で、ふつうの「～てください」よりも敬意が高いです。「くださる」の命令形にあたり、店員・案内放送・掲示など、お客様や目上の人に使います。

Formation

お + Verb (ます-stem) + ください / ご + Suru-noun + ください (e.g. 待つ→お待ちください、利用→ご利用ください)

Examples

• 少々お待ちください。

  しょうしょうおまちください。

  Please wait a moment.

• こちらの席にどうぞお座りください。

  こちらのせきにどうぞおすわりください。

  Please have a seat here.

• 足元にお気をつけください。

  あしもとにおきをつけください。

  Please watch your step.

Notes

• Use the ます-stem (待ち, 座り), not the ない- or て-form.「お」の後ろは動詞のます形（待ち・座り）を使い、ない形・て形にはしません。
• With する-nouns use ご instead of お (ご利用ください, ご注意ください), though some words take お (お電話ください).する名詞には「お」ではなく「ご」を付けます（ご利用ください・ご注意ください）。ただし「お電話ください」のように「お」を取る語もあります。
• Verbs with special honorifics use those instead: 食べる→召し上がってください, 見る→ご覧ください, 来る/行く→いらしてください.特別な尊敬語を持つ動詞はそちらを使います（食べる→召し上がってください、見る→ご覧ください）。
