How it works

Means that while doing one (usually main) action, you take the opportunity to also do a second, related action. The first action is the main purpose; the second is something extra done because you happened to be doing the first. Common with errands and trips.

ある動作(多くは主目的)をする機会を利用して、ついでにもう一つの関連した動作も行うことを表す。一つ目が主な目的で、二つ目はその機会を使って追加でする行為。買い物や外出などでよく使う。

Formation

Vる/Vた + ついでに;N + のついでに

Examples

  • ぎんこうにいくついでに、ゆうびんきょくにもよった。

While I was going to the bank, I also stopped by the post office.

  • さんぽのついでに、パンをかってきた。

While I was out for a walk, I bought some bread.

  • そうじをしたついでに、まどもふいた。

While I was cleaning, I also wiped the windows.

Notes

  • The first action is the real purpose; the second is incidental — don't use it when both actions are equally planned main goals.一つ目の動作が主な目的で、二つ目はおまけ。両方とも同等の主目的のときには使いにくい。
  • Use Vる/Vた + ついでに for verbs and N + のついでに for nouns.動詞は「Vる/Vたついでに」、名詞は「Nのついでに」。
