ことから

How it works

Used to give a reason or basis for a judgment, conclusion, or naming. It points to an objective fact (a cause or evidence) from which something follows or is concluded. Common in explanations of why something got its name or how a conclusion was reached.

ある事実を根拠・理由として、結論や判断、名前の由来などを述べるときに使います。客観的な事実から「だから~だ」と導く表現で、説明文でよく用いられます。

Formation

Plain form (Verb/い-adj plain, な-adj + な/である, Noun + である) + ことから

Examples

  • このまちはさくらがおおいことから、「さくらまち」とよばれている。

Because this town has many cherry blossoms, it is called "Sakura Town."

  • まどがわれていることから、どろぼうがはいったとかんがえられる。

Judging from the fact that the window is broken, it is thought that a burglar got in.

  • かれがやくそくをまもらなかったことから、しんようできないとはんだんした。

From the fact that he didn't keep his promise, I concluded that he can't be trusted.

Notes

  • The clause after ことから is usually a conclusion, judgment, or naming — not a simple personal feeling or volitional action.後半は結論・判断・命名などになり、単なる気持ちや意志的な行動は来にくいです。
  • Distinct from から (plain reason): ことから emphasizes an objective fact serving as evidence/basis.理由の「から」より客観的な事実を根拠にするニュアンスが強いです。
  • な-adjectives and nouns take な/である before ことから (e.g. 有名なことから, 学生であることから).な形容詞・名詞は「な/である」を伴います(例:有名なことから)。
