~ので

because / since (objective, softer reason)

〜ので(理由・丁寧でやわらかい)

JLPT
N5
Register
polite

How it works

States a reason or cause. Compared with から, ので sounds softer, more objective, and more polite, so it is common in requests, explanations, and formal speech. Connects with plain forms; na-adjectives and nouns take な before ので (静かなので, 学生なので).

理由や原因を述べます。「から」と比べると、「ので」はやわらかく客観的で丁寧な響きがあり、依頼や説明、丁寧な場面でよく使われます。普通形に接続し、ナ形容詞と名詞は「な」を介します(静かなので、学生なので)。

Formation

普通形 + ので(Naな・Nな + ので)(例:高いので、静かなので、雨なので、行くので)

Examples

  • きょうはあめなので、でかけません。

Because it's raining today, I won't go out.

  • あたまがいたいので、はやくかえってもいいですか。

Since I have a headache, may I go home early?

  • このみせはやすいので、よくりようします。

Because this shop is cheap, I use it often.

Notes

  • ので is softer and more polite than から; prefer it when making requests or giving reasons politely.「ので」は「から」よりやわらかく丁寧で、依頼や丁寧な説明に向いています。
  • Na-adjectives and nouns connect with な, not だ (静かなので, 学生なので, not 静かだので).ナ形容詞・名詞は「だ」ではなく「な」で接続します(○静かなので ×静かだので)。
  • You can also say ですので / 〜ますので in very polite speech, but plain form + ので is standard.丁寧体に「ですので/ますので」も使えますが、普通形+のでが基本です。
