How it works

Has two main uses. (1) With a verb in plain past or noun + の, it means 'after doing X (then do Y)', where X is a necessary prior step for an informed decision. (2) With dictionary-form verb or noun + の, it means 'in the process of / in terms of', indicating something important within a certain activity or aspect.

二つの用法があります。(1) 動詞た形・名詞+の+上で:「~してから(判断して)」という意味で、Yをするのに必要な前段階を表します。(2) 動詞辞書形・名詞+の+上で:「~する過程で・~の点において」という意味で、ある活動の中で大切なことを述べます。

Formation

Notes

  • Past-tense + 上で = a deliberate prior step taken before an important decision; not just any temporal 'after'.た形+上で=重要な判断の前の意図的な準備段階を表し、単なる「~した後で」とは限りません。
  • Dictionary form + 上で = 'in the process of / in doing', often paired with words like 大切, 必要, 重要.辞書形+上で=「~する過程で」で、「大切・必要・重要」などと一緒に使うことが多いです。
  • Do not confuse with 上に (moreover) or physical 上 (on top of).「上に(しかも)」や物理的な「上」と混同しないようにしましょう。
