How it works

Sentence-final particle used when you are trying to recall something you once knew but have forgotten, or when softly confirming a fact with the listener. It carries a casual, musing tone, like 'Now, what was it again?'

一度知っていたことを思い出そうとするとき、または相手に軽く確認するときに使う終助詞です。「あれ、何だったかな」というくだけた独り言のような響きがあります。

Formation

Plain form + っけ。Past tense is most common (Vた/Aかった/Nだった + っけ). With non-past nouns/na-adjectives often だ(った)っけ; in polite speech ~ですっけ/~ましたっけ.

Examples

  • あれ、あしたってやすみだっけ?

Huh, tomorrow's a day off, isn't it? (Wait, was tomorrow off?)

  • かれのでんわばんごう、なんばんだったっけ?

His phone number—what was it again?

  • このほん、もうよんだっけ。

Have I already read this book, I wonder?

Notes

  • Mostly used in casual speech; ですっけ/ましたっけ are politer but still conversational.基本はくだけた会話で使い、ですっけ/ましたっけは丁寧だが会話的。
  • Often follows past tense even about present facts (休みだっけ) because you're recalling.現在のことでも「休みだっけ」のように過去形になることが多い(記憶をたどるため)。
  • Used for things you should know but forgot—not for brand-new information.全く新しい情報ではなく、知っていたはずのことを思い出す場面で使う。
