How it works

From the verb 放す (はなす). Attaches to the verb stem (ます-form base) to mean either (1) leaving something in a state after an action without dealing with it (often with a negative/careless nuance), or (2) a state continuing nonstop.

「放す」から来た表現で、動詞のます形語幹に付きます。(1) ある動作の後、そのまま放置して始末をしない(だらしない・困るというマイナスの含み)、または (2) ずっと~し続けている状態を表します。

Formation

Verb ます-stem + っぱなし (e.g. つけっぱなし, 立ちっぱなし, 開けっぱなし)

Examples

  • でんきをつけっぱなしでねてしまった。

I fell asleep with the lights left on.

  • でんしゃがこんでいて、いちじかんもたちっぱなしだった。

The train was crowded, so I had to stand the whole hour without sitting.

  • まどをあけっぱなしにしないでください。

Please don't leave the window open.

Notes

  • Attaches to the ます-stem, then っぱなし (つける→つけっぱなし).ます形の語幹に「っぱなし」を付けます(つける→つけっぱなし)。
  • Usually carries a negative/careless nuance ('left it and didn't fix it'), though 立ちっぱなし just means 'kept standing'.「放置して困る」というマイナスの含みが多いですが、「立ちっぱなし」は単に「ずっと立っている」です。
  • Often used with にする / で to describe the resulting state.「~っぱなしにする/で」の形で結果の状態を表すことが多いです。
