てしょうがない

How it works

A colloquial way to say that a feeling or sensation is so strong there's nothing you can do about it. Means 'extremely' or 'unbearably,' very close to ~てたまらない but more casual. ~てしようがない/~てしかたがない are more formal variants.

感情や感覚が強すぎて、どうしようもないことを表すくだけた言い方です。「とても」「我慢できないほど」の意味で、「~てたまらない」に近く、より口語的。「~てしようがない」「~てしかたがない」は少し丁寧な形です。

Formation

い-adjective (く-form) + てしょうがない; な-adjective/feeling-noun + でしょうがない; Verb たい-form → たくてしょうがない. Formal: ~てしかたがない/~てしようがない.

Examples

  • はっぴょうのことがきになってしょうがない。

I can't stop worrying about the presentation.

  • くすりをのんだら、ねむくてしょうがない。

After taking the medicine, I'm unbearably sleepy.

  • ふるさとのともだちにあいたくてしょうがない。

I'm dying to see my friends back home.

Notes

  • しょうがない is the casual form; しかたがない / しようがない are more formal equivalents.「しょうがない」は口語形、「しかたがない」「しようがない」はより丁寧。
  • Like てたまらない, used for the speaker's own strong feelings; for others add ようだ/らしい.「てたまらない」同様、話し手自身の強い感情に使う。第三者には「ようだ」等を添える。
  • Common with 気になって, 眠くて, and たい-form (会いたくて).「気になって」「眠くて」やたい形(会いたくて)とよく使う。
