てならない

How it works

Expresses that a feeling or thought arises naturally and uncontrollably, so strong that you cannot suppress it. It often attaches to spontaneous emotions and verbs of thinking/feeling (思える, 気がする), giving a somewhat literary, heartfelt tone.

感情や考えが自然にわき上がり、どうしても抑えられないほど強いことを表します。「思えてならない」「気がしてならない」など、自発的な感情や思考の動詞につくことが多く、やや文章的で内面的な響きがあります。

Formation

い-adjective (く-form) + てならない; な-adjective/feeling-noun + でならない; Verb (て-form) + ならない (esp. 思えて/気がして/泣けて).

Examples

  • そぼのことがおもいだされて、かなしくてならない。

Memories of my grandmother come back to me, and I can't help feeling sad.

  • なにかわるいことがおきそうなきがしてならない。

I can't shake the feeling that something bad is about to happen.

  • かれのはなしはうそのようにおもえてならない。

I can't help feeling that his story is a lie.

Notes

  • Pairs especially well with spontaneous-feeling verbs: 思えてならない, 気がしてならない, 泣けてならない.自発の動詞と相性がよい:思えてならない・気がしてならない・泣けてならない。
  • Slightly more literary/written than ~てたまらない and ~てしょうがない.「~てたまらない」「~てしょうがない」よりやや文章的・硬い。
  • Emphasizes a feeling that arises by itself, beyond the speaker's control.意志に反して自然にわき上がる感情を強調する。
