How it works

Expresses a cause that leads to a bad or undesirable result — 'because of / due to.' It places blame or responsibility on the cause. The positive counterpart is 〜おかげで. 〜せいか softens it to 'perhaps because.'

悪い結果・好ましくない結果をもたらした原因を表し、「〜のせいで」と責任や非難の気持ちを込めて使います。良い結果の場合は「〜おかげで」を使います。「〜せいか」は「〜のせいか(はっきりしないが)」とやわらげた言い方です。

Formation

Noun + の + せいで。Verb (plain) + せいで。い-adj + せいで。な-adj + な + せいで。「雨のせいで」「寝坊したせいで」「不便なせいで」。

Examples

  • あめのせいで、しあいがちゅうしになった。

Because of the rain, the match was canceled.

  • ねぼうしたせいで、でんしゃにのりおくれた。

Because I overslept, I missed the train.

  • あなたのせいで、みんなにめいわくがかかった。

Because of you, everyone was inconvenienced.

Notes

  • 〜せいで is for bad results and often assigns blame; use 〜おかげで for good results.悪い結果や責任を表すときに使い、良い結果には「〜おかげで」を使います。
  • Noun connects with の; な-adjective connects with な (静かなせいで).名詞には「の」、な形容詞には「な」を付けて接続します(静かなせいで)。
  • 〜せいか means 'perhaps because' (uncertain cause): 疲れていたせいか、よく眠れなかった.「〜せいか」は「たぶん〜が原因で」と原因をはっきり言わない言い方です(疲れていたせいか)。
