How it works

Expresses the standpoint or perspective from which something is judged or evaluated — 'for X / to X'. The following clause typically states an evaluation (important, difficult, valuable, etc.). The noun-modifying form is ~にとっての.

Formation

Examples

For children, play is something very important.

For me, family is more important than anything.

This experience became an unforgettable memory for him.

Notes

  • Followed by an evaluation/judgment (大切だ, 難しい, etc.), not by an action the subject does.
  • Don't confuse with ~として (role/capacity) — 私にとって = 'from my standpoint', 私として = 'in my capacity/role'.「~として(資格・役割)」と区別する。
  • To modify a noun, use ~
