How it works

〜ましょうか has two main uses: (1) offering to do something for someone ('Shall I...?'), and (2) suggesting doing something together ('Shall we...?'). It is formed from the volitional polite ending ましょう plus か. Context and whether the action is for the listener distinguish 'I' from 'we.'

Formation

Examples

Shall I carry your luggage? (offer)

Shall we get started soon? (suggestion)

Shall I open the window? (offer)

Notes

  • Offer use ('Shall I?') is for doing a favor for the listener; suggestion use ('Shall we?') includes both speaker and listener.
  • More tentative/polite than 〜ましょう alone, because か invites the listener's response.「か」が相手の返事を求めるため、「〜ましょう」だけより控えめで丁寧です。
