How it works

〜ませんか is a polite invitation meaning 'won't you...?' or 'would you like to...?' It is formed from the negative polite verb ending ません plus the question particle か. By phrasing the invitation negatively, it sounds softer and more considerate of the listener's wishes, leaving room to decline.

「〜ませんか」は「〜しませんか/〜はどうですか」と相手を誘う丁寧な表現です。丁寧な否定形「ません」に疑問の「か」を付けます。否定の形で誘うことで、相手の意向を尊重した柔らかい言い方になり、断る余地を残します。

Examples

  • いっしょにおひるをたべませんか。

Won't you have lunch with me?

  • しゅうまつ、えいがをみにいきませんか。

Would you like to go see a movie this weekend?

  • ちょっとやすみませんか。

Shall we take a little break?

Notes

  • 〜ませんか invites the listener (focus on the other person); 〜ましょう proposes doing together (assumes agreement).「〜ませんか」は相手を誘う表現(相手中心)。「〜ましょう」は一緒にやろうと提案する表現(合意を前提)。
  • It is for inviting/suggesting, not for asking a literal negative yes/no question in most contexts.勧誘・提案の表現で、多くの場合、文字どおりの否定疑問ではありません。
