How it works

いつも is an adverb meaning 'always' or 'usually', describing a habitual or regular action. With a negative verb it can mean 'not always / never'.

「常に・たいてい」という意味の副詞で、習慣的・規則的な動作を表します。否定文では「いつも〜ない(いつもとは限らない・全然〜ない)」の意味になります。

Formation

いつも + Verb/Adjective (adverb, placed before the predicate)

Examples

I always get up at seven.

  • かれはいつもげんきです。

    He is always cheerful.

Notes

  • いつも describes habits/repeated actions; よく means 'often' (frequent but not every time).いつもは習慣・繰り返す動作を表し、よくは「しばしば」(毎回ではない)を表します。
  • Note いつも (always) differs from いつ (when?): いつ asks a time, いつも states frequency.いつ(疑問詞「いつ?」)とは別で、いつもは頻度を表します。
