How it works

With an affirmative verb, もう means 'already'. With a negative verb, もう means 'not anymore / no longer'. It often pairs with the past tense for 'already done'.

肯定文では「既に」、否定文では「もう〜ない(もはや〜ない)」の意味になります。「もう〜ました」で『すでに〜した』を表します。

Formation

もう + affirmative (= already) / もう + negative (= not anymore)

Examples

  • もうひるごはんをたべました。

    I have already eaten lunch.

  • もうおかねがありません。

I don't have any money anymore.

  • しゅくだいはもうおわりましたか。

Have you already finished your homework?

Notes

  • もう + affirmative = 'already'; もう + negative = 'no longer / not anymore'. Watch the verb polarity.もう+肯定=既に、もう+否定=もう〜ない。動詞の肯定・否定に注意します。
  • Contrast with まだ: もう食べました ('already ate') vs. まだ食べていません ('haven't eaten yet').まだと対比します(もう食べました/まだ食べていません)。
  • もう also means 'more' before a quantity: もう一つ (one more), もう少し (a little more).数量の前のもうは「あと・もっと」の意味になります(もう一つ、もう少し)。
