いつ

How it works

いつ is the question word for 'when', asking about a point in time. Unlike most time nouns, いつ usually does not take the particle に when it is the topic/question focus (いつ行きますか, not いつに行きますか). It can be marked by から, まで, は, etc.

「いつ」は時を尋ねる疑問詞「when」です。多くの時間名詞と違い、疑問の焦点になるときはふつう「に」を付けません（いつ行きますか／×いつに行きますか）。「から・まで・は」などは付けられます。

Examples

• 誕生日はいつですか。

  たんじょうびはいつですか。

  When is your birthday?

• いつ日本へ来ましたか。

  いつにほんへきましたか。

  When did you come to Japan?

• いつから働いていますか。

  いつからはたらいていますか。

  Since when have you been working (here)?

Notes

• Do not attach に directly to いつ as the question word (say いつ行きますか, not いつに).疑問詞「いつ」に直接「に」を付けない（いつ行きますか。×いつに）。
• いつか = 'someday', いつも = 'always'; か/も change the meaning entirely.「いつか」は「someday」、「いつも」は「always」。か・もで意味が変わる。
• いつまで = 'until when', いつから = 'since when' are very common combinations.「いつまで」「いつから」はよく使う組み合わせ。
