How it works

いる states the existence of animate beings—people and animals. The being that exists is marked with が and the location with に. It is also used to express having people in one's life, such as family members, friends, or pets. The negative is いない (polite いません), and the past is いた.

Formation

Examples

There is a cat in the garden.

    I have two younger sisters.

There is no one in the classroom.

Notes

  • Use いる for living, moving beings (people, animals); use ある for non-living things.
  • Location takes に; negative is いない / いません ('there isn't / aren't').
  • For family or pets you 'have,' いる is used: 兄がいます ('I have an older brother').
