How it works
~たことがある expresses that you have experienced doing something at least once in the past. It attaches to the plain past (た-form) of a verb. The nuance is 'have ever done' rather than just 'did,' so it is used for notable or noteworthy experiences, not routine recent actions. The negative ~たことがない means 'have never done.'
Formation
Examples
I have been to Japan.
Have you ever ridden a horse?
I have never eaten sushi yet.
Notes
- Always attaches to the past (た) form: 食べた + ことがある. Don't use the dictionary form here.
- Use it for experiences, not for actions that just happened (e.g., not '今ご飯を食べたことがある').
