How it works

〜に行く expresses going somewhere for the purpose of doing an action. Attach に to a verb's ます-stem (e.g. 食べに行く 'go to eat') or to an action noun (e.g. 買い物に行く 'go shopping'). The に marks the purpose. It also works with 来る (come) and 帰る (go back).

「〜に行く」は、ある動作をする目的でどこかへ行くことを表します。動詞のます形(食べに行く)や動作を表す名詞(買い物に行く)に「に」を付けます。「に」が目的を表します。「来る」「帰る」とも使えます。

Formation

Verb ます-stem + に行く | Action Noun + に行く (e.g. 見ます→見に行く、買い物に行く)

Examples

  • としょかんへほんをかりにいきます。

I'm going to the library to borrow books.

  • ともだちとえいがをみにいきました。

I went to see a movie with a friend.

  • デパートへかいものにいきませんか。

Won't you go shopping at the department store?

Notes

  • Use the ます-stem before に, not the dictionary form: 食べに行く (not 食べるに行く).「に」の前は辞書形ではなくます形を使います。例:食べに行く(×食べるに行く)。
  • The destination usually takes へ or に; the purpose verb/noun takes に行く: 海へ泳ぎに行く.行き先は「へ」「に」で示し、目的の動詞・名詞は「に行く」を取ります。例:海へ泳ぎに行く。
