How it works

To say you are good/bad at or like an activity, nominalize the verb with の and mark it with が, then use 上手 (good at), 下手 (bad at), or 好き (like). For example 歌うのが上手 = 'good at singing.' The の turns the verb phrase into a noun so it can be the subject of these adjectives.

ある動作が上手・下手・好きだと言うには、動詞を「の」で名詞化し「が」で示してから、「上手」「下手」「好き」を使います。例:歌うのが上手=「歌うことが上手」。「の」は動詞句を名詞にして、これらの形容詞の主語にします。

Formation

Verb dictionary form + のが + 上手/下手/好き(だ/です) (e.g. 泳ぐ + のが上手)

Examples

  • いもうとはえをかくのがじょうずです。

My little sister is good at drawing pictures.

  • わたしはりょうりをつくるのがへたです。

    I'm bad at cooking.

  • かれはほんをよむのがすきです。

    He likes reading books.

Notes

  • Use の (or こと) to nominalize the verb; with の the particle が follows: 泳ぐのが好き.動詞は「の」(または「こと」)で名詞化し、「が」を付けます。例:泳ぐのが好き。
  • 上手・下手・好き are na-adjectives, so the thing you're good at/like is marked with が, not を.「上手・下手・好き」はな形容詞なので、対象は「が」で示し「を」ではありません。
