How it works

With an affirmative verb, まだ means 'still' (a state continues). With a negative verb, まだ means 'not yet'. The 'not yet' meaning very often uses まだ〜ていません.

肯定文では「依然として(まだ続いている)」、否定文では「まだ〜ない(未だ)」を表します。『まだ〜ていません』の形で『まだ〜していない』をよく表します。

Formation

まだ + affirmative (= still) / まだ + negative, often まだ〜ていません (= not yet)

Examples

  • まだあめがふっています。

    It is still raining.

  • ひるごはんはまだたべていません。

    I haven't eaten lunch yet.

  • しゅくだいはまだですか。

Is your homework still not done?

Notes

  • For 'not yet', the natural form is まだ〜ていません, not まだ〜ませんでした.『まだ〜ない』は、まだ〜ていませんの形が自然で、まだ〜ませんでしたは不自然です。
  • Contrast with もう: まだ寝ています ('still sleeping') vs. もう起きました ('already woke up').もうと対比します(まだ寝ています/もう起きました)。
  • まだ can stand alone as an answer: 「もう食べましたか。」「いいえ、まだです。」('Not yet.')「いいえ、まだです」のように単独でも使えます。
