How it works
を marks the direct object of a transitive verb — the thing that the action is done to. It can also mark the place through/from which movement passes (e.g. exiting a room, walking along a road) with motion verbs.
「を」は他動詞の目的語、つまり動作の対象を示す助詞です。また、移動動詞とともに通過点・出発点(部屋を出る、道を歩く)を示すこともあります。
Formation
Noun(object) + を + transitive verb
Examples
毎朝コーヒーを飲みます。
まいあさコーヒーをのみます。
I drink coffee every morning.
本を読みました。
ほんをよみました。
I read a book.
公園を散歩します。
こうえんをさんぽします。
I take a walk through the park.
Notes
- を is written with the special kana を but pronounced 'o'.「を」は文字は「を」ですが、発音は「お」です。
- Only one を normally appears per clause; intransitive verbs do not take を.通常一つの節に「を」は一つ。自動詞は「を」を取りません。
- With motion verbs, を can mark the path or point of departure (道を歩く, 家を出る).移動動詞では通過点・出発点を示します(道を歩く、家を出る)。
