How it works

は marks the topic of the sentence — the thing being talked about, often translatable as 'as for ~' or 'speaking of ~'. It presents known/established information and frames the rest of the sentence. It contrasts with が, which introduces or emphasizes new subject information.

「は」は文の主題、つまり「何について話すか」を示す助詞で、「〜について言えば」という意味合いを持ちます。既知の情報を提示し、文の枠組みを作ります。新しい主語を導入・強調する「が」と対比されます。

Examples

  • きょうはあついです。

Today is hot. (As for today, it's hot.)

  • ねこはすきですが、いぬはすきじゃありません。

I like cats, but I don't like dogs.

  • わたしのなまえはやまだです。

    My name is Yamada.

Notes

  • The particle は is always pronounced 'wa', never 'ha'.助詞の「は」は「わ」と発音します。
  • は often carries a contrastive nuance ('X is..., but Y...'), as in the cats/dogs example.「は」は対比のニュアンス(XはAだがYはB)を持つことがあります。
  • Use は for the known topic; use が when introducing new or emphasized information.既知の主題には「は」、新情報・強調には「が」を使います。
