より
than (marks the standard of comparison)
〜より(比較の基準)
- JLPT
- N5
- Register
- neutral
How it works
より marks the thing being compared against — the standard or baseline. In the pattern 'A は B より [adjective]', A has more of the quality than B. The item directly before より is the one judged to be lesser/the reference point.
「より」は比較の基準(基になるもの)を示します。「AはBより〜」の形で、AがBに比べてその性質が上であることを表します。「より」の直前にくるものが比べる基準です。
Formation
Noun + より (B より = 'than B'); often A は B より + adjective
Examples
飛行機は電車より速いです。
ひこうきはでんしゃよりはやいです。
Planes are faster than trains.
今日は昨日より寒いです。
きょうはきのうよりさむいです。
Today is colder than yesterday.
弟は私より背が高いです。
おとうとはわたしよりせがたかいです。
My younger brother is taller than me.
Notes
- Word order: 'A は B より [adj]' — B is the thing being surpassed. Switching A and B reverses the meaning.語順は「AはBより〜」で、Bが比べられて負ける側。AとBを入れ替えると意味が逆になる。
- For questions comparing two things, use 〜と〜とどちらが (A と B と どちらが…); answer with 〜のほうが…より.二つを比べて質問するときは「AとBとどちらが〜」を使い、答えは「〜のほうが〜より」。
- より can also mean 'from' in formal/written contexts (e.g. letters), but the N5 comparison use is most common.「より」は手紙など書き言葉で「〜から」の意味にもなるが、N5では比較の用法が中心。
