How it works

まで marks the endpoint of an action, time, or distance — the point up to which something continues. With time it means 'until', with place it means 'as far as / to'. It emphasizes that the action continues all the way to that point.

「まで」は動作・時間・距離の終点(到達点)を表します。時間なら「〜まで(ずっと)」、場所なら「〜まで(行く)」の意味で、その点までずっと続くことを示します。

Formation

Noun (time/place) + まで; also Verb (dictionary form) + まで

Examples

  • ごごごじまではたらきます。

I work until five in the afternoon.

  • とうきょうからおおさかまでしんかんせんでいきます。

I'll go from Tokyo to Osaka by bullet train.

  • あめがやむまでまちましょう。

Let's wait until the rain stops.

Notes

  • まで means continuous action up to a point; までに means 'by (a deadline)' for one-time actions — don't confuse them.「まで」は終点までずっと続く動作、「までに」は期限を表す(一回の動作)ので混同しないこと。
  • Often paired with から to express a range: 'from X to Y' (XからYまで).「から〜まで」で範囲(〜から〜まで)を表すことが多い。
  • After a verb, use the dictionary (plain) form: 終わるまで (until it finishes).動詞に付くときは辞書形を使う(例:終わるまで)。
