How it works

へ marks the direction or destination of movement, like 'to' or 'toward'. With movement verbs it is largely interchangeable with に, but へ emphasizes the direction/heading of motion rather than the precise arrival point, and can feel slightly more formal or literary.

「へ」は移動の方向・行き先を示す助詞で、「〜へ/〜の方へ」と訳せます。移動動詞では「に」とほぼ交換可能ですが、「へ」は到達点よりも進む方向を強調し、やや改まった・文語的な響きになります。

Formation

Noun(place/direction) + へ + motion verb

Examples

  • にほんへいきます。

    I am going to Japan.

  • うみへあそびにいきました。

I went to the sea to play.

  • みぎへまがってください。

    Please turn to the right.

Notes

  • The particle へ is pronounced 'e', not 'he'.助詞の「へ」は「え」と発音します。
  • Use へ only for direction/destination — it cannot mark a point in time or existence location the way に can.「へ」は方向・行き先専用で、時点や存在の場所には使えません(そこは「に」)。
  • に and へ are usually interchangeable for going places; へ leans more literary/directional.行き先では「に」と交換可能ですが、「へ」はより文語的・方向的です。
