How it works

よ is a sentence-ending particle that emphasizes the speaker's statement, often conveying new information the listener doesn't yet know, or asserting/reminding them of something. It adds a 'just so you know' or 'I'm telling you' nuance.

Examples

That shop is already closed, you know.

This book is really interesting, I'm telling you.

    Oh, you're forgetting your keys!

Notes

  • Use よ for information the listener likely doesn't know; use ね for shared knowledge.「よ」は相手が知らないであろう情報に使い、共有している情報には「ね」を使う。
  • よ can sound pushy or rude if used to insist forcefully — tone and context matter.
  • よね combines both: asserting while also seeking agreement (そうですよね).「よね」は主張と同意の確認を合わせた言い方(そうですよね)。
