How it works

何 is the question word for 'what'. It is read なに on its own or before most particles, but なん before counters and before sounds in the d/t/n rows (e.g. なんですか, なんで, 何時=なんじ). It replaces the unknown thing in a sentence.

「何」は「何(なに・なん)」と読む疑問詞で「何」を尋ねます。単独や多くの助詞の前では「なに」、助数詞の前や「だ・で・と・の・て」など(d/t/n音)の前では「なん」と読みます。

Formation

何 (なに/なん) + particle / counter; なん before counters and d/t/n sounds

Examples

  • これはなんですか。

    What is this?

  • なにをたべますか。

    What will you eat?

  • いま、なんじですか。

    What time is it now?

Notes
