How it works

ね is a sentence-ending particle used to seek the listener's confirmation or agreement, like English 'right?' or 'isn't it?'. It assumes the listener shares the speaker's view, creating a soft, friendly, shared-feeling tone.

Formation

Sentence (です/ます or plain form) + ね

Examples

It's nice weather today, isn't it?

This food is delicious, don't you think?

Tomorrow is a day off, right?

Notes

  • ね seeks agreement on something the listener also knows; よ tells the listener something new — don't swap them.「ね」は相手も知っていることへの同意を求め、「よ」は相手が知らない情報を伝えるので使い分ける。
  • Overusing ね with strangers can sound overly familiar; it builds rapport in friendly contexts.
  • A drawn-out ねえ adds extra emphasis or admiration (きれいですねえ).「ねえ」と伸ばすと感嘆や強調が加わる(きれいですねえ)。
