も

How it works

も means 'also' or 'too', indicating that something is the same as a previously mentioned item. It replaces は, が, or を in the sentence (not added on top of them). With negatives it conveys 'not ... either', and repeated も means 'both ... and ...'.

「も」は「〜も」で、前に述べたものと同様であることを示します。「は・が・を」の代わりに使い（重ねません）、否定文では「〜も〜ない」、繰り返すと「〜も〜も（両方）」を表します。

Examples

• 私も学生です。

  わたしもがくせいです。

  I am a student too.

• コーヒーもお茶も好きです。

  コーヒーもおちゃもすきです。

  I like both coffee and tea.

• 今日は何も食べませんでした。

  きょうはなにもたべませんでした。

  I didn't eat anything today.

Notes

• も replaces は/が/を — say 私も (not 私はも or 私がも).「も」は「は・が・を」の代わりに使います（私も、× 私はも）。
• With a negative verb, 〜も means 'not ... either' / 'nothing/no one' (誰も来ない, 何もない).否定とともに「〜も〜ない」で全否定を表します（誰も来ない、何もない）。
• Repeating も (AもBも) means 'both A and B' (or, with negatives, 'neither A nor B').「AもBも」で「両方」、否定なら「どちらも〜ない」になります。
